Hays High Student Selected as All-State Musician
Pedro Balderas, 17, alto saxophonist in the Hays High Rebel Band, will perform Feb. 11 in San Antonio at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
Balderas was one of 1,580 selected from more than 60,000 Texas students who competed for the honor. In early January, Balderas placed first in the area competition.
The musical performances are part of the annual Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention. Balderas will perform with the 4A Symphonic Band.
More than 26,000 people are expected to attend the convention.
Free Gun Safety Class for Children
On Feb. 5, Garland Walker, a Texas Parks & Wildlife Hunter Education Instructor, will present a free gun safety class for children in kindergarten through sixth grade at Cabela’s in Buda. Children will learn what do to if they see or find a gun. Walker will also show a DVD of McGruff the Crime Dog. Class takes place upstairs in one of Cabela’s meeting rooms from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
