Is our Constitution still relevant?
That’s the topic of this year’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) “Voice of Democracy” scholarship. Students in grades 9-12 can submit a video on the topic. The top winner gets a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the American college, university or vocational/technical school of the student’s choice. That’s 30 thousand, not three, which is why each year more than 50,000 high school students compete. State winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., in March as well as a portion of $152,000 in national awards. Check out the rules and apply by visiting www.vfw.org.
No school this Monday
Remember there is no school on Oct. 8, which is a student holiday at Hays CISD.
Elm Grove student to lead fundraiser based on his experience
Ty Dahlstrom, a first-grader at Elm Grove, has wholeheartedly adopted “The Leader in Me” principles. He will lead the fundraising effort at the school on behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Ty selected that organization based on his own experience with it; he and his family were able to vacation in Hawaii to fulfill Ty’s wish. He has dysautonomia, a condition that leads to multiple system atrophy. The underlying cause is a malfunction of the autonomic nervous system. Throughout October, Elm Grove students and staff will be collecting spare change to help Ty’s dream of helping another child.
