More than 200 wounded U.S. veterans and support personnel will be cycling through Hays County on Tuesday on a statewide journey of recovery and rehabilitation.
Adorned in red, white and blue, some of the participants in the Ride 2 Recovery Texas Challenge will be pedaling with prosthetic legs. A few will be riding souped-up tricycles.
On April 16, they’ll leave the Center for the Intrepid, a unit for burn and amputation survivors, at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. They’ll spend their first night in San Marcos.
The riders will depart San Marcos’ Country Inn and Suites at 9 a.m. Tuesday, following a route that will take them to Hunter Road to San Antonio Street, through downtown and the Texas State University campus and out on Post Road toward Kyle.
The veterans are scheduled to cycle past four Hays CISD campuses on Tuesday morning on their way to Atkins High School and the Capitol building, and after a trek of several days they will cross the finish line in Arlington.

Ride 2 Recovery is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and wellness of injured veterans through indoor and outdoor cycling.
The group says cycling is an important part of the recovery process because it is an activity in which almost all patients with mental and physical disabilities can participate, and it helps to speed up the rehabilitation process.
