A tip for keeping tabs on your dog

Mt. City Montage

by PAULINE TOM

Winter must be here. Robins arrived by the hundreds on Sunday morning in Mountain City, and along with them dozens of Cedar Waxwings. My favorite binocs (Pentax Papilio 6.5 x 30) got quite a workout.

Did you have unexpected holiday company? The week of New Years, while watching television in our bedroom about 10 p.m., in walked Sheba. The sweet Border collie-mix lives next door. We checked all doors. Sheba panicked to such an extent with firecrackers that she escaped from her invisible fence, bounded over our dachshund fence, ran into our garage, squeezed through a very small doggie door into the kitchen, and sauntered down the hallway. Can you picture Sheba coming through a dachshund size doggie door?!

Thank goodness Sheba knew we’re a safe home. Many dogs escape through normally secure barriers on July 4th and New Year’s Eve, never to be reunited with their owners. We purchased a tag for BoD from PetHub at a fraction of the cost of an embedded chip (like KissMe’s “Home Again”). Any smart phone with a UPC scanner can read the tag to get in contact with a lost pet’s owners. On PetHub.com, we input basic facts about BoD and ourselves, and uploaded a photo. Pretty cool.

Way beyond cool ranked Sinya on Lone Man Creek, the spot for our grand finale cherry-on-top 40th anniversary celebration. Sinya perches on a ridge less than 20 minutes from Mountain City, but who has heard of it? While we were there the Travel Channel filmed a “Top 5” segment and an Austin television station films there this week, so the secret may be out.

With the entire place reserved for one couple at a time, make plans far in advance but, don’t hesitate to check at the last minute because sometimes Sinya has open dates or cancellations. To keep Sinya private, the address is not revealed until a few days before the reservation.
