A visit to the new tax office

by DICK SCHNEIDER
Buda Chamber of Commerce

Here it is January 3 and the Christmas Holidays have already slipped by.

I knew they were almost over last week because I had to pay my taxes at the new governmental center in San Marcos.

I looked at the calendar and said to myself Dick; you better write the check and get it down to San Marcos before this week gets away from you. So I wrote the check, jumped in the car and headed for San Marcos.

As I was going around the square it seemed like the traffic was light. I pulled up to the Annex building and found a parking space right in front of the building. Wow, I’m in luck I said to myself. I jumped out, walked up to the door and tried to walk right in. Oh, oh, I said to myself when the door wouldn’t open. What’s going on, I said to myself. I can’t get in to pay my taxes and I am going to be late.

As all of the bad thoughts were going through my head I saw a sign on the window. WE HAVE MOVED. Then it dawned on me. The tax office has moved to the new government center and I don’t have the faintest idea where it is located and I need to get there quickly so I can get back to Buda for a meeting. As I looked further I found that there were explicit directions on how to get to the new location and it didn’t appear too hard to find.

I did find the new government center and once I got through the security guards, who were very pleasant by the way, I was off on my trek through the beautiful new Hays County Government Center. What a place they have built. Most all of the county departments are in this new facility and I must say it is so much better than running around San Marcos looking for the right location for a particular county department.

I wound my way down the halls and around the corners and then I came upon the County Tax Department. After I deposited my check, I had a chance to visit with my good friend Luanne Caraway who showed me around her department. As usual I asked her for a discount since I paid before the end of the year. I got the same answer that she always gives me, NO. I will keep asking and she will keep saying NO, but I do it anyway.

If you haven’t seen the government center, take a ride down to San Marcos and take a look. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Don’t forget to sign up to attend the Buda Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet, “Viva Las Vegas” which will take place on Feb. 18, 2012. It is the best party in Buda.

See you next month.
