Honoring our vets

Odds & Ends
by MYRTLE HEIDEMAN

Hope all had a safe and “fireless” 4th of July. All seemed to be ok in Uhland.

I enjoyed a day with family members and a bunch of their friends at Lake LBJ on the 4th. No one went hungry; the boat was kept busy, as were the jet skis. The fireworks were outstanding and many enjoyed the swimming.

St. John Lutheran Church celebrated America Support of Wounded Troops on Sunday, July 1 during morning worship service. Rev. Roger Hotopp gave a very inspiring patriotic sermon and patriotic and religious music and songs by Legends N Time featuring John Hanson enhanced the service. Ten veterans attended and were recognized and thanked. A special thanks to those who donated to the Wounded Troops fund and also the Sons of Fallen Heroes fund that was given at St. John Church.

A large crowd on the church grounds enjoyed a picnic meal of hot dogs and ice-cold watermelons. Thanks to all the workers, servers, cooks, the music makers and especially all the worshipers.

This past Sunday, July 8, was also a grand day at St. John Lutheran Church. The church was full of worshipers including several visitors. Among them were Bob and Karen Schlortt, former members of St. John. It was good to see Bobby Jean Hagedorn in church who is recovering from hip surgery and is getting around very well with a walker. David Goeke, who will be our new pastor, was greeted and welcomed. Hope all and many more will attend next Sunday. Thanks to Rev. Roger Hotopp and his wife, Cindy, for all their help and services they gave to St. John Church.

Rattlesnakes don’t just bite people, just ask Logan Crowell. Logan’s dog, Bandit, was bitten and is recovering at home. Nothing seems to be safe anymore, not even mailing a letter. A resident of Uhland put a check to pay a bill in the rural mailbox and someone removed it before the next pick up. They duplicated the check and wrote checks to various stores. Be advised not to put a check in your mailbox, raise the flag and leave it overnight.

Weekend visitors of Charlie and Donna Orn were their son, Sean Orn and family from Livingston. Gladys Sorrells spent several days with her family, Tim and Debbie Sorrells and daughters, in Austin.

Sympathy is extended to Bob Wind and family on the death of his wife, Marlene Wind.

There will be no Women’s Guild meeting in July for the St. John members. Be sure and attend the August meeting since the Harvest Festival is coming up on October 6 and there will be a lot to do. If anyone would like to rent a booth space, call Vicki Schawe at (512) 398-6622.
