NEW BRAUNFELS – The Boerne Champion baseball team took Game 1 in its best-of-three series with Hays Friday night at New Braunfels Canyon.
Champion won the pitcher’s duel 3-0 in a game that lasted just 95 minutes and saw only a combined seven hits between the Rebels and Chargers.
Hays pitcher Alec Swofford surrendered just four hits, but one of them was a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to Nate Guerra that proved to be the difference in the game. Swofford struck out six batters in the contest.
Champion hurler Luke Strieber yielded three hits and fanned eight batters in seven innings to get the win and put the Chargers up 1-0 in the series.
Game 2 is set for Saturday at 2 p.m., also at NB Canyon. A third game, if necessary, will take place 30 minutes after Game 2.
