EDGEL
STAFF REPORT
Ryan Edgel, a junior at Hays High School, is joining others from across the country to help build a Habitat Home in Beius, Romania, as part of Habitat for Humanity International’s “Learn and Build Experience.”
Learn and Build Experience is a summer program that provides youth ages 16 to 18 the opportunity to get involved with Habitat’s mission of ending substandard housing through two weeks of building and learning about poverty housing. Edgel is one of 16 individuals selected nationwide for the July 15-28 trip in Beius.
“It’s always been my dream to travel and see different cultures, but I want to be more than a tourist. I want to be involved. I want to help, and really get to know the people. I am so excited to have this opportunity to work with Habitat for Humanity and the people in Romania. It’s amazing how one organization can make such a difference,” Edgel said.
In addition to being a Habitat for Humanity volunteer, Edgel is a member of the Hays High School debate team, marching band, wind ensemble and region jazz band. He’s a Life Scout, Sea Scout and has earned the MCJROTC rank of Cadet 1st Sergeant as well.
In addition to building a Habitat home, the participants will take part in various hands-on educational and community events while working directly with Romanian volunteers, and the family who will live in the home he will be helping to build.
