Twenty-two Hays County citizens graduated from the Hays County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy, Class Number 25, last week. The course began in 1998, over 500 residents of Hays County have attended the Citizens Academy. The course, instructed by Hays County Sheriff’s Office deputies, correction officers, detectives, emergency communication officers, and police officers from the San Marcos Police Department, is 13 weeks long, and consists of approximately 45 hours of instruction. Participants observe a SWAT team exercise, participate in emergency vehicle operations, and have a chance to shoot firearms with deputies. Applications will be available in July for the next Hays County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy scheduled for August.
