Hays County residents and visitors are invited to attend the official opening of the county’s new Government Center on at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. In addition to ribbon-cutting and flag-raising ceremonies, area elected officials will offer remarks and discuss the contents of a time capsule that will be placed in the Government Center and opened in 2061.
Following the ceremony, the 232,000-square-foot Government Center, which consolidates a number of San Marcos-area county offices, will be open for limited-area tours until 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
The ceremony will take place in front of the building at 712 South Stagecoach Trail, San Marcos. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors.
Most county offices in the building, such as Adult Probation, Compliance/Collections, Constable Precinct 1, County Clerk, County Courts-at-Law, District Clerk, Elections, Grants, Juvenile Probation and Tax Assessor-Collector will remain open during the ceremony for the public’s convenience. The Auditor’s Office, District Attorney, Human Resources and Treasurer’s Office plan to close so that employees can attend the ceremony. For offices not listed, please call before visiting to ensure they are open during the ceremony, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday.
Directions: Note that many GPS and online maps do not yet show the correct location of the Government Center. To join the celebration, take the Wonder World Drive exit off of i-35 and head west, or go east on Wonder World from Hunter Road. At the bottom of the railroad overpass turn north on South Stagecoach Trail. The Center is at the end of the street.
