Kathy Silberman’s letter entitled “What Century Is It Anyway?” may reflect some misunderstanding of the current Texas sonogram law. While the law does require that a woman have a sonogram before undergoing an abortion, it does not require the invasive trans-vaginal procedure mentioned in Ms. Silberman’s letter. The clinic may perform the non-invasive abdominal sonogram which involves the technician moving a wand over the expectant woman’s lower abdomen.
Planned Parenthood already does the invasive trans-vaginal sonograms prior to performing abortions. On March 29 in a speech to Texas State’s Bobcats for Life, Mrs. Abby Johnson, a former Bryan Texas Planned Parenthood clinic director, stated that the facility routinely performed sonograms to determine the gestational age of the baby. Knowing the baby’s age was required so the woman could be charged accordingly.
What century is it anyway? It is the 21st century, when modern medical technology gives women a window to the womb so they can make an informed decision before undergoing an invasive abortion.
