From Staff Reports
All four Hays CISD varsity basketball teams won Friday night, as Hays swept Smithson Valley and Lehman swept Lockhart.
The Hays boys improved to 4-2 in District 27-4A with their second win of the season over the Rangers. The Rebels won 75-64 at Bales Gym behind 19 points from Hayden Cagle, and 17 points apiece from Isaiah Williams and Caleb Kimbro. Hays is now alone in third place in the district standings and a win at home Tuesday night against Lehman would go a long way toward the Rebs’ goal of earning their first playoff berth in more than a decade.
The Lady Rebels squeaked by Smithson Valley 33-31 on the road to improve to 5-3 in 27-4A action. Hays, which was led by Nicole Alcantara’s 13 points in the defensive battle, is close to clinching a playoff spot of its own. The Lady Rebs will be looking for revenge Tuesday night when Hays plays at Lehman, who beat the Lady Rebels for the first time in team history just before the Christmas break.
The Lehman girls kept alive their hopes for a second-ever playoff berth with a 60-52 win over Lockhart. The Lady Lobos, who improved to 3-5 in District 27-4A, were led by Amara Smith’s 17 points.
The Lehman boys team, which started off 0-4 in district play this season, won its second straight 27-4A matchup with an 80-44 drubbing of Lockhart Friday night to climb back into the playoff hunt. The Lobos are in a must-win situation when they travel to play rival Hays Tuesday night. The Lehman boys team beat Clemens last Tuesday 75-62 behind 22 points each from DeAndre Carson and JaMael Windom and 11 more points from Chris Hicks to earn its first district win of the season.
