Penalties loom for late 2011 property tax payments

SUBMITTED REPORT

Property owners who have not paid their 2011 taxes have until July 2 to pay up to avoid a 15 percent collection penalty.

By state law the tax office must turn over all delinquent accounts to collection attorneys on July 1, but because that is a Sunday this year, the deadline is July 2, according to a Hays County news release. Payments must be madeĀ  or postmarked on or before, July 2.

Hays County Tax Assessor-Collector Luanne Caraway noted that “if you are delinquent on July 3, your bill will go up by more than 15 percent that day. If you are delinquent you can contact the tax office to work out a payment agreement if you are unable to pay the full amount.”

Notices were mailed in May informing taxpayers that a 15 percent collection penalty would be added if the account is not paid on time. However, persons who are older than 65, disabled, or on active military duty out of the area may qualify for a deferral of homestead property tax. Persons who think they are eligible for a deferral should contact the Hays Central Appraisal District, (not the tax office) at 21001 N. Interstate 35 in Kyle or at 512-268-2522.

Taxes can be paid online at www.hayscountytax.com or at any one of the county’s four tax office locations, including the Buda office at 500 Jack C. Hays Trail as well as the Kyle office, which has moved to temporary buildings at 5458 FM 2770 at Crystal Meadow Drive.
