Many changes in Buda since the big fire

Buda Bits

by SANDRA GRIZZLE

It was 18 years ago on Sunday night, July 10, 1994, when four buildings on Main Street in the historical downtown district of Buda were destroyed by fire. Everything was a total loss when the fire, which began in the attic of a glassblowing shop on the corner of block four, gutted that building as well as the businesses of the Prairie Schooner, Poor Richard and Co. and the Buda Women’s Boutique.

A lot has changed since that night in 1994. Now there is the brick building on the corner at 220 Main, which is home to longtime local dentist Don Taylor, and his staff at Buda Dental Professionals. Next door is Hope Sanford’s Cimarron Rose Antique and Collectibles, Yellow Sweater Knitting Parlor and Nonna Gina’s Italian Restaurant. Also one of the young volunteer firefighters that night, Clay Huckaby, is now the chief fireman for the Buda Fire Department.

We are very proud of our downtown area and all the businesses that make Buda what it is today.

Lots of work going on in our area with the construction of the new Microtel Hotel on Cabela Drive, the storage facilities on the north side of Buda Post Office and the Silverado Apartments on the south side of the post office. Construction of the new senior center for the Onion Creek Senior Citizens on Barton’s Crossing at FM 2770 is underway with Cromwell Construction Company. The work also continues in downtown with the replacement of new waterlines, drainage and the additional streetlights. Work is also complete on the new lift station on RR 967 by Buda Elementary School.
