Hays High’s tennis team is looking forward to a good run at the Del Valle tournament March 22-23 after placing at several tournaments in recent weeks.
Monday Hays varsity and junior varsity teams defeated Hyde Park by a score of 20-1 in mixed matches.
At the Smithson Valley Outback tournament in mid-February, boys doubles team of Ricky Hearn and Jackson Johnson took first place, with Josh Bieter and Zach Curry taking second in boys doubles. In mixed doubles, Brook Fulwiler and Sam Simoneau took first place. In girls doubles, Gract Ortiz and Abby Knedlik took first, while Sarah Farell and Haley Ortiz took second.
The following week, the JV placed at Hendrickson, with Sabrina Smith taking 1st consolation in girls singles and Antonio Sanchez and Tyler Gray taking 1st consolation in boys doubles.
Hays will host its invitational for JV and varity March 29-30, with play at both Hays and Lehman high schools. Hays and Lehman will host the district tournaments April 3-4. Varsity teams will play both days, while JV will play April 4.
“The teams have been doing very well and we hope to continue to reach our peak at the district tournament,” Hays coach Debbie Cook said. “We are proud of both JV and varsity players for their wins and continued improvements in their games.”
