(Ila) Pearl Doherty (1913-2012)

(Ila) Pearl Doherty, 99, of Buda, was surrounded by her family when she passed away Saturday, April 14, 2012 in Wimberley at Deer Creek Nursing Home. She was born April 12, 1913 to Dooley Albert and Annie Elizabeth Jane (Mayes) Smith in San Marcos.

Pearl married her “Best Friend” William “Cotton” Doherty Sr., on November 27, 1930 in San Marcos.  After marriage, they moved to Buda where they raised their family and attended the First Baptist Church in Buda.  Pearl worked for many years in the millinery department at Scarborough’s Department Store in Austin.

The Dohertys were very family oriented and enjoyed camping as a family where Cotton and Pearl would pull their own trailer and set up their own tent.   She was a member of the Buda Senior Citizens and a member of the Senior Citizens Watch for Law Enforcement and was very active and popular with the Sheriff’s Department of Hays County.  For 80 years, she was involved with the Barton Cemetery Association.

Pearl was loved by her family very much and as she had a green thumb with plants and flowers, she also had a green thumb with her family.  She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and was a skilled quilter. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. Oh what an Angel God has received.

Pearl’s husband, Cotton Doherty (February 1985), son, Dooley Albert “Biggun” Doherty, four brothers and four sisters have preceded her in death.

She is survived by her family: sons, Bobby Joe Doherty and wife, Barbara of Driftwood, George Dale Doherty and wife, Stella of Canyon Lake and William “PeeWee” Doherty and wife, Ellen of San Marcos; brother, Johnny Albert Smith and wife, Mary Lou of Kingsbury; nine grandchildren, Dale Doherty and wife, Mary Laura, Connie Henry and husband, Bob, Diane Newsome and husband, Jay, Rusty Doherty, Steve Doherty and wife, Cindy, Destini Evans and husband, Justin, Bobby Doherty and wife, Lisa, Amanda Carroll and husband, Clint and Deborah Doherty, 25 great grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 104 S. San Marcos, Buda, Texas 78610.

A celebration of Pearl’s life was held Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Buda.  Interment followed at Barton Cemetery, Buda.
