Hemphill Elementary School first-grader Gia Velasquez (left) is the winner of Hays CISD’s “Green Today = Here Tomorrow” design contest. District Executive Director of Maintenance and Operations R.C. Herrin brought word of the recognition – and a $250 prize for the school—to a recent Hawks school assembly. Gia’s design, titled “Hawks Go Green to Keep Our Skies Clean” was a winner in an effort to support student-led green, sustainable initiatives in the district. The design, enlarged to a banner, now hangs in the front office at Hemphill. Gia is joined by HES Principal Paige Collier to display her banner.
