Hays CISD students entering grades 4-6 were eligible to participate in the Summer Choir Camp, held July 16-20 at the Performing Arts Center.

The camp is an extension of the Kodály Certification Program, which is part of the School of Music at Texas State University. The goal of Kodály is to foster an understanding and love of music by integrating the best ideas, techniques and approaches to music education.

During the week, students learned new songs, took field trips and sang their hearts out at the concert on the final day of camp where family and friends could enjoy the show.

Kameron Bazemore, 10, is in her school’s choir at Camino Real Elementary School. She attended the camp because she loves to sing. She said she also enjoyed the field trips, including putt-putt golf, the Kyle Pool, bowling and roller skating.

For Henry Martinez, this is his second year in the summer choir camp. This Chapa Middle School student said one of his favorite parts of the week was singing songs he’s never sung before, such as “The Johnson Boys” and “Someone”.

Henry, who was a little nervous speaking with a reporter, said the camp was just the beginning of his singing career.

“When I’m older, my dream is to be a singer.”

He said he would even try out for a reality singing show such as “America’s Got Talent.”
