Catching up with Uhland news bits

Odds & Ends

by MYRTLE HEIDEMAN

Will someone figure out what is going on with the weather? The peach trees bloomed in February, the “June” bugs were here in March and my Christmas cactus is blooming in April. Don’t know if it has anything to do with the weather, but several rattlesnakes, which don’t “rattle” have been seen and some have been disposed of, so be aware.

The St. John Lutheran Church of Uhland was well-attended Sunday morning to meet and greet Mr. David Goeke, a lay minister of the L.C.M.S. who brought the message. A reception and refreshments followed the service. We hope all will attend church service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 29 to again hear and greet David Goeke, as he will bring the service. A carry-in lunch will follow.

Speaking of food, a group of friends and members of the Ebenezer Lutheran Church of Maxwell gathered at the recreation building for a bountiful lunch and an afternoon of visiting and various games on Thursday. Attendees included Mollie Wranitzky, Jean CollierĀ and Myrtle Heideman of the Uhland area and Hazel Lehman from Kyle.

Well, while we are on the subject of food, a group of cousins of the Hagedorn-Hohmann families met at Mamacitas in San Marcos last Tuesday. Attending were Charles and Norma Voight of Fredericksburg, El Nora Estes of Austin, Al and Joyce Hagedorn of Fentress, Erwin and Bobby Jean Hagedorn of San Marcos and Myrtle Heideman of Uhland.

Dorothy Schneider honored her grandson, Michael Schneider, on his 17th birthday with a barbecue supper in her home. Among the guests helping Michael celebrate were his father and members of his family, Natasha, Yana and Michael’s friend Eric. Also Randa and Mike Bishop and son, Jackson of Kyle, Gordon and Janice Sassman and Gary Schneider of Uhland.

Sorry the news did not appear in last week’s paper. I did write it, guess I’ll catch up on some past news.

The Women’s Guild of St. John Lutheran met and it was reported that a baby-changing table has been installed in the church’s bathroom, the sock collection for nursing homes is continuing and several other projects were discussed and will be reviewed after more information is collected at the May luncheon meeting at noon Saturday, May 12.

The men’s club decided not to have a barbecue fundraiser in June. Other ideas for another fellowship are being explored. Stay tuned!

St. John Lutheran is planning an adult instruction class to start soon. It is a short course in basic Christian Doctrine. It is an eight-session class in preparation for church membership. It is a good refresher course. Sign up in the church or call Pastor Hotopp at 210-269-4805.

If you play the organ and/or piano and are looking for part-time employment, please call Charlie Orn at 512-922-7428 for more information. It would be for St. John Lutheran Church in Uhland.

Gladys Sorrells spent Easter week visiting with her family, Tim, Debbie, Mia and Heather. While there she attended the choir rehearsal (Lamar Middle School) at United Methodist Church where granddaughter Mia is a member of the choir. Grandmother Gladys is very proud of Mia who is following grandma’s musical footsteps.
