STAFF REPORTS
Eight Hays High School teachers had their wishes granted by the Parent-Teacher-Student Association.
The wishlist program helps teachers obtain technology and other supplies for the classroom that are outside the school’s – or the teacher’s – budget.
Thirteen teachers submitted their wishlist items totaling about $7,000, though not all wishes could be funded this year.
Wishlist committee chairperson Aedin Meagher of Manchaca, said the PTSA raised money to help purchase text books, a portable computer hard drive, a camera lens, two Nooks (e-Readers), art portfolios, classroom supplies, an HP notebook and American Sign Language materials. The purchases cost about $2,000.
Meagher and fellow wishlist committee member Wendy Scarborough granted wishes based on serving the greatest need. She added that all items purchased with PTSA funds remain in the Hays High classroom if a teacher leaves the school.
In addition to wishlist items, Meagher said the PTSA also provides scholarships to graduating seniors.
One of the primary sources of fundraising comes from the Recognition Walk at the entrance to the school. Meagher said the PTSA sells personalized bricks that are installed in the walkway.
“Parents buy them to honor students and their achievements or folks may purchase them to honor a teacher,” Meagher said.
