Donations needed for summer school incentives
Hays CISD staff leading the summer school program at Tom Green Elementary are asking the community to donate items to encourage success. Lourdes Cervantes, librarian at Hemphill Elementary, said the 350 students in summer school at Tom Green come from several different elementary campuses, including Hemphill, Camino Real and Science Hall. Helping to make the experience positive with small rewards is important, according to Cervantes. She suggested donated prizes such as books, games, balls, gift certificates for a dessert or other treat; items in Spanish would be appreciated. The last day of summer school is June 29. Teen births and high school dropouts linked in new report
The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, along with America’s Promise Alliance, recently presented a new report, Teen Pregnancy and High School Dropout: What Communities Can Do to Address These Issues. The report shows the link between teen pregnancy and dropout rates. Texas has the fourth highest rate of teen births. According to the report, 30 percent of teen girls who drop out of high school cite early pregnancy or parenthood as the culprit. Only 40 percent of teen mothers complete high school and only two percent of teen moms (those who have a baby before age 18) finish college by age 30. Learn more at www.txcampaign.org.
