School Briefs: 01/11/12

Schools to close for MLK Day
Monday, Jan. 16, is a districtwide student and staff holiday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

District recognizes school board members
With more than 15,000 students under their watch, the seven members of the Hays CISD Board of Trustees are responsible for the direction and organization of the district’s school.

Their job is to establish a vision for the education program, design a structure to achieve that vision, assure schools are accountable to the community and strongly advocate continuous improvement in student learning. In recognition of this service, January is designated as School Board Recognition Month, affording residents an opportunity to express their appreciation to trustees for their service to the community.

Trustees schedule next meeting
The Hays CISD Board of Trustees is set to meet on Monday, Jan. 23. The board will enter executive session at 5:30 p.m., with the public meeting set to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of Lehman High School.

Redistricting plan in public view
Copies of the school board’s plan to redistrict its five single-member districts are available for public review during business hours at the administrative offices of Hays CISD at 21003 Interstate 35 in Kyle.

Trustees adopted the plan on Nov. 14. As required by law, the change was submitted on Dec. 19 to the U.S. Attorney General for preclearance consideration.

Hays CISD to hold auditions for Talent Showcase
Students who wish to audition for the districtwide 2012 Talent Showcase must sign up by Jan. 27 at the district’s website, www.hayscisd.net. Once registration and fees are submitted, auditions will take place Feb. 13 at the Performing Arts Center. A rehearsal will follow on March 2 for the showcase, which will be held the first Saturday in March.

School seeks volunteers for UIL contest
Community members, including high school students needing volunteer hours, are being asked to volunteer Saturday, Jan. 14, at the University Interscholastic League academic competition hosted by Wallace Middle School in Kyle.

Middle-school students will compete in categories ranging from Spanish oral reading to maps, charts and graphs and number sense.

Volunteers are needed as time keepers and student escorts at some time between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For information, contact Dee Niedzielski at [email protected].

District offers community education
From zumba and yogilates to beading and piano lessons, Hays CISD offers diverse classes for free or for a nominal fee through its community education program for kids, teens and adults.
