Hays junior Lindsey McCurdy won the individual medalist title at the District 27-4A golf tournament held at the Vaaler Creek Golf Club in Blanco April 3-4.
McCurdy shot a 1-under 71 Tuesday and a 2-over 74 Wednesday for a two-day total of 1-over 145.
The key moment during McCurdy’s victory came Wednesday when she eagled the par-5 No. 8 hole. After a booming drive she hit a wedge to six-feet and made the eagle putt.
McCurdy beat Smithson Valley High senior Sydney Reed by a single stroke in the event. Smithson Valley easily won the team title.
McCurdy, who qualified for the state tournament as a sophomore last year, advances to play in the regional tournament April 16-17 at Golf Club of Texas in San Antonio. The top two individual medalists from the regional tournament will qualify for the UIL State Class 4A Golf Tournament April 30-May 1 at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.
“Winning always feels good,” McCurdy said. “Advancing to regionals was the main goal, though, because I’m just looking to get back to state. Making it to state and giving myself a chance to win there is my main goal right now.”
Hays head golf coach Danny Preuss said McCurdy always seems to flourish under pressure.
“Lindsey thrives when the competition gets tougher,” Preuss said. “She wasn’t playing very well early on Wednesday, but when it counted most she came up big.”
