Hays High students win PEC-paid trips to Washington, D.C.

Hays High School students have a history of winning Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC)-funded Youth Tours to the nation’s capital. That legacy has been enhanced by a record-setting show of four juniors being named winners in this year’s contest. Fifty Central Texas schools accounted for 500 competing student essays, all written to describe a cooperative business with an environmentally sustainable project. Hays qualified six of the twelve finalists. The winners included (l-r) Porter Hehr, Allison Walker, Haley Hodgens, and Sam Sebree. Additionally, Kasey Borthwick and Ileana Flores received Honorable Mentions and a cash award. The D.C. trips are seven days with all-expenses paid by PEC. (Photo by Jim Cullen)
