Keep up with Mountain City online

by PAULINE TOM

Mark your calendars. Our City Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14. The agenda will be posted 72 hours beforehand.

Many have requested an email notification of the council agenda. According to Mayor Tiffany Curnutt, “The City Council has decided not to email out the agendas but rather post them to the website. Meetings are scheduled on the calendar, agendas are posted on the website and also on the physical boards at each entrance prior to the meetings. Essentially we wanted to drive individuals to the website ... which seems to be common city practice.”

Light bulb over my brain, please! An opt-in email notification system could send word, “The agenda has been posted,” with a link to the website, www.mountaincitytx.com.

This links to tidbits received week before last from John Hatch:

“I am pleased to announce that on Friday, 03 August 2012, John & Rosa Hatch will be celebrating our 30th year anniversary of marriage. We have lived on Poplar Drive since September of 1996 and feel that Mountain City is a great little city. John & Rosa (not to be confused with former residents, John – no relation – & Rebecca Hatch), will be celebrating this milestone at the TRIO Restaurant (Four Seasons Austin).

I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation of all members (past, present and future) of the City Council for giving of their time and effort in order to make life in Mountain City a more pleasurable and enriching experience.

We both look forward & love to read all the tidbits about Mountain City in the Hays Free Press. Thank you, Pauline!”

Thank you, John, and I apologize for the delay! This column did not appear last week because of our annual Camp NeeNee y Poppa for our grandsons Andrew (16); Zach (11); and Ethan (8).  Schlitterbahn three days. San Antonio two days. Houston two days. Groupons galore.

“Hi Pauline

I enjoy reading your column in the Hays Free Press about the different birds.

We live behind Mountain City on some ranch land – I was out filling up the horses water trough the other day and a pretty little bird flew up to get some water.  I wish I had my camera with me but I didn’t.

I had never seen a bird like this before – it looked like a little warbler or wren but it had a green head – sort of a sea green color – its back feathers and tail feathers were the same color and it’s lower body was darker – like black or gray. Does this sound like anything familiar to you?

I tried looking it up on Texas bird websites and could not find one that looked like it. I haven’t seen it again.”

Ah!  A female Painted Bunting! Many have departed Mountain City in recent days for Mexico and Central America. (Thank you, Priscilla, for writing!)
