PEC union vote fails

STAFF REPORT

Pedernales Electric Cooperative linemen and equipment operators, including PEC workers in Kyle, have rejected an attempt to unionize. The vote, conducted Jan. 18-19, failed 127-78.

A majority vote would have created the first union in PEC’s history.

“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate our linemen’s faith in myself and the board to support them in their employment at PEC,” PEC General Manager R.B. Sloan said in a prepared statement. “Skilled linemen and operators are crucial to helping us provide the quality and reliability of service our members have come to expect from us, and we certainly aren’t lacking in talent, ability and professionalism from our employees.”

PEC is the largest electric cooperative in the country, with more than 200,000 members, and it would have become one of the nation’s only cooperatives with unionized workers.
