BUDA -- Nyah Gray, 17, is one of eight recipients to receive the Military Child of the Year award.
While experiences of military children vary, Gray will be representing the U.S. Air Force branch when receiving the award. Gray's stepfather currently serves as an Air Force Civil Engineer; her biological father was killed in action in 2012.
Recipients were judged on scholarship, volunteerism, leadership, extracurricular involvement and other criteria as they face challenges of military family life. The COVID-19 pandemic brought its own array of obstacles as many schools were closed and everything went virtual.
An extended virtual celebration will be held beginning on April 8 followed by 10 days to recognize each awardee using its digital channels. Each awardee will receive a $10,000 grant, a laptop computer and more.
The Hays Free Press/News-Dispatch will have a detailed story in a few weeks.
