An apology to readers

STAFF REPORT


This newspaper has learned that it published three columns containing plagiarized material.


The columns appeared in the Neighbors section of the Sept. 7, Sept. 21 and Nov. 2 editions. They contain sentences and phrases that were copied from other sources without attribution.


• “Boys do read!”, published Sept. 7, contains unattributed material taken from an article titled “Boys and Books” by Jane McFann. McFann’s article first appeared in the August 2004 edition of Reading Today.


• “Will public libraries fade away?”, published Sept. 21, contains unattributed material taken from a blog entry titled “Public libraries: A long-overdue argument” on the site What’s Next:Top Trends, at toptrends.nowandnext.com.


• “Celebrating ‘Snowy Day’”, published Nov. 2, contains unattributed material taken from a biography of the writer and illustrator Ezra Jack Keats which appeared on the website www.ezra-jack-keats.org.


The columns have been removed from the newspaper’s website. We apologize for publishing them.
