Local Independence Day events and closings

STAFF REPORT

Kyle appears to be about the only city in Central Texas to be holding its July 4 fireworks display after San Marcos canceled its show earlier this week.

A unique location – on a well-watered driving range beside a lake – means Kyle can stage the show safely where others cannot, officials say. As of Wednesday morning, Kyle officials said their show is still on.

The show’s new location at the southwest corner of Kyle Parkway and Kohler’s Crossing can be seen from the parking lot of the Hays CISD Performing Arts Center across the street or from the Kyle Crossing or Kyle Marketplace shopping centers  up the road. Parking will not be available at the golf course.

The show is scheduled to begin at about 9:30 p.m. Monday, July 4.

Buda meanwhile is continuing with its annual Red, White and Buda Independence Day celebration, only without the fireworks. The festivities start with a Children’s Parade down Main Street starting at the old post office at 10 a.m. and ending at City Park. Line-up for the parade begins at 9:30 a.m. across from Garcia’s restaurant. Inflatable games, magicians and concessions will be available at City Park between 10 a.m. and noon. A free concert headlined by The Trishas and featuring the Kevin Smith Band and the Kevin Kelson Band will begin at 6 p.m. at City Park.

On Monday, government offices, banks and many business will be closed in observance of Independence Day. These include Hays County offices; the cities of Buda and Kyle; the U.S. Post Office and the Hays Free Press.
