STAFF REPORT
The Hays Free Press will have a new editor when reporter Wes Ferguson steps into the newsroom’s top job on Thursday.
Under one name or another, the Hays Free Press has been serving readers in the Kyle and Buda areas for more than 100 years. Ferguson said he’s looking forward to building on the newspaper’s proud tradition of local journalism.
In addition to his primary responsibility of ensuring relevant and accurate coverage of local news, Ferguson said he will seek to engage new residents who are still getting to know Kyle, Buda and the surrounding areas.
“The best newspapers connect their neighbors and reinforce communities,” he said. “Kyle and Buda have been growing so fast. Our success depends on our ability to bring new neighbors into the fold.”
Ferguson replaces outgoing editor Brad Rollins, who has launched a joint online venture with three Hays County news sources: the San Marcos Mercury, San Marcos Local News and the Hays Free Press. Rollins will continue to report on county and regional issues for the Hays Free Press.
Ferguson has been a reporter at the Hays Free Press since January. He holds a journalism degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was managing editor of The Daily Texan, and he has worked for other newspapers including the Longview News-Journal and Austin American-Statesman.
He’s also the author of a forthcoming book about his travels on the Sabine River.
