Future health workers awarded St. David’s scholarships
Two recent Hays CISD graduates are among 36 Central Texas students who received four-year scholarships from the St. David’s Foundation.


Lehman High graduate Jemmy Mondragon and Hays High graduate Suzana Zukanovic both intend to pursue health care-related careers. Mondragon plans on majoring in pre-med at Texas State University; Zukanovic will major in pre-med at the University of Texas at Arlington.


They will each receive $6,000 a year for four years.


Barnside finishes basic training
Army Pvt. James M. Barnside has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.


During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.


A 2010 graduate of Lehman High School, Barnside is brother of Brandon Alford of Sawgrass Circle in Kyle.


Two locals graduate from SFA
Alex Matthew Brown of Buda and Ashley Elizabeth Martell of Kyle recently graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University.


Brown received a bachelor’s degree in forestry. Martell received a bachelor’s degree in environmental science.


Also, local students attending SFA were recently named to the president’s list and dean’s list. Christina Ann Milburn of Buda made the president’s list for maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average. Jessica Taylor Colonnetta and Virginia Mac Donald of Buda and Kim Gripp of Kyle made the dean’s list for maintaining a GPA of at least 3.5.


Kyle students earn degrees form LeTourneau
Dane Aziz and Priscilla Buckhannon, both of Kyle, were recently among 534 graduates at LeTourneau University in Longview. Aziz received a bachelor’s degree in business management. Buckhannon received a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.


Kyle student gets Hermann Sons scholarship
Samantha Wenger of Kyle has received a $1,000 scholarship from the Hermann Sons Retirement Home in Comfort. Wenger, a member of Manchaca Lodge No. 321, plans to study criminal justice at Texas State University.


Founded as a mutual aid society for German immigrants, Hermann Sons operates as a non-profit fraternal benefit life insurance company with lodges in 138 towns and cities in Texas.


Elliot makes Angelo dean’s list
Aeriel C. Elliott of Buda has been named to the dean’s list at Angelo State University in San Angelo. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must be enrolled fulltime and maintain a grade-point average of at least 3.25.


Yanez makes Georgia Tech dean’s list
Erica Yanez of Kyle was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Georgia Institute of Technology. Students must be enrolled fulltime and earn a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher to be eligible for the list.
