Kyle Library to kick off summer reading club June 8

by CONNIE BROOKS

The Kyle Public Library’s spectacular summer reading club officially kicks off at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8. Children and adults who sign up for the club will receive gifts generously provided by Pedernales Electric (as supplies last). Mayor Lucy Johnson will read a story, there will be a piñata, and cookies and beverages will be provided.

The summer reading club’s six weeks are packed with exciting events: Reading with the Ringling Bros. Clown Show at noon on Monday, June 6; two magic shows by Cody Fisher; two presentations of “Jungle Jim’s Bugs;” an origami workshop by library staffer Teresa Montalvo; a puppet show; Splash Day (courtesy of the Kyle Fire Department); and an Arts and Crafts Day featuring face painting, balloon twisting, foil sculpting, bead bracelets, and collages made from magazines. The summer reading club will conclude with a wrap-up party and prize raffle on Thursday, July 14.

Readers will receive raffle tickets based on the number of books they read (or have read to them, in the case of young children). The many prizes include Kyle Pool passes, Schlitterbahn tickets, bicycles, a skateboard, and an iPod. The prizes serve as incentives for children to read during the summer and to maintain or improve their reading skills. There will be a separate raffle for adults, as an incentive for grown-ups to model reading and appreciation of libraries for the children in their lives.

Story times will feature fabulous themes and will continue on the usual schedule: Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon and Fridays (bilingual) at 10:30 a.m. Every Friday afternoon, the library’s community room will become a gaming scene, with everything from board games to Wii games. From 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Fridays, children aged 7-12 are invited to participate, and the 13+ set can indulge in gaming from 3:00-5:00 p.m.

For more detailed information about the summer reading club, come by the Kyle Public Library and pick up a brochure or go to www.kylelibrary.com and click on Summer Reading Club to view the brochure. It will be an important summertime addition to the information displayed on your refrigerator.
