Staff Reports

Fifty-two Lehman High School Cheerleaders attended the Universal Cheer Association Texas IV Summer Camp at the University of Texas at Austin last month.

Forty-seven teams competed, the Lobos taking a freshman squad (14), coached by Donye Curry; junior varsity squad (13), coached by Joe Martinez; and a varsity squad (25), coached by Stacy Martinez.

The varsity squad received 2nd place in the “Home Pom Routine” large varsity in which the squad shows a prepared pom routine and competes on the first night of camp.

The varsity squad received 1st place in the “Camp Champ All-American Cheer” in the large co-ed division – receiving first place for the first time.

The freshman squad received 4th place in the “Camp Champ All-American Cheer” and Joshua Peterson won the “Jump Off” for male yell leaders.

The three Lobo squads, as a whole, received the “banana”–most spirited – on the third night of camp.

Lehman had 11 All-American Cheerleaders this year, up from eight last year

Six Lobos were asked to be on the UCA staff next summer: Michelle Abeita (captain), Danielle Tamayo, Katie Maxwell, Alicia Naspretto, Derek Jackson and Kody Banda.

The last award given at camp every year is the most prestigious – the Leadership Award – for which every squad votes on the team they would want to be a part of if they weren’t a member of their own team.

This year the JV and freshman squad received the Leadership Award in the JV and below category,  the varsity squad received the Leadership Award in the varsity category and the varsity mascot, Louie the Lobo (Alicia Naspretto), received the Leadership Award for mascots – making it a complete sweep.

Out of 47 teams, Lehman was the only team given this award in all categories, according to a UCA staffer.
