School Briefs: 07/27/11

HCISD online registration advised
Online registration is available right now for all Hays CISD returning students for the 2011-2012 school year. The system is designed to help parents by cutting down on long waits in line to fill out paper forms. The district indicates the process “will not eliminate all paperwork, (but) it will definitely quicken the registration process.”

All pre-registering parents receive a “FASTPASS” to quickly move through the paperwork tables at their designated campuses on back-to-school day or night. For parents needing computer access, school computer labs will be available to the public during regular campus hours starting August 1. Additionally, those computer labs will be available for special assistance on “late” Thursday (10 a.m.-7 p.m.), August 4, and “early” Friday (7 a.m.-4 p.m.), August 5. To begin online registration, visit the district’s website home-page at www.hayscisd.net/ and click on the red box titled “Student Registration.” The district has established an email help address at [email protected].

New-to-the-district students must register in person at the appropriate campus. The necessary enrollment forms may be downloaded – and details of required information are available – at www.hayscisd.net/StudentRegistration.

Live Oak Academy takes applications
Live Oak Academy, Hays CISD’s recently redesigned alternative high school, has a few openings left for the fall semester. If your student is at least a sophomore, enjoys working independently, might like a smaller, peaceful school environment, and is interested in preparing for further education after graduation, visit www.hayscisd.net/Academy for information and a downloadable application. Principal Julie Ruisinger says “We welcome your interest!” and offers her email, [email protected], for questions.

Cougar Camp Coming
Chapa Middle School’s sixth annual Cougar Camp for incoming sixth-graders is set for the morning of Friday, August 5. The Chapa staff and Cougar upper classmen annually help the incoming class learn the “ins and outs” of middle school life, offering critical information about the structure of the day, the layout of the campus, school pride, available activities, and handbook details. It’s all done in a fun way, it’s free and snacks are provided. Additional information and a registration form can be found at http://hayscisd.net/Chapa.cfm. For more information, email Leah Cochran at [email protected] or call 557-5380.

Some lunch prices increase
Hays CISD reports lunch prices at all Hays CISD campuses increase slightly in the coming school year to comply with the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Prices for students receiving free or reduced lunches are unaffected by the change.

The lunch price for those paying the regular price will increase by 10 cents, resulting in a $2 lunch for elementary students and a $2.20 lunch for middle and high school students. All other prices remain the same.

Lobo Kickoff
Lobo Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, August 6. Tina Valdez reports that festivities start with the Lobo freshmen and junior varsity at 7 p.m., followed by the Lobo varsity at approximately 8:35 p.m. “Cheer, band and dance run from about 8 to 8:30 p.m.,” Valdez predicts. The community is cordially invited.

Rebel Round Up Ready
Hays High School’s “Rebel Round Up” and schedule pick up is set for seniors and incoming 9th-graders Thursday, August 11, with seniors scheduled 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and 9th-graders 3-7 p.m. (campus tours available). Juniors are scheduled from Friday, August 12, 8 a.m.-noon, and sophomores are set for Friday, August 12, 1-5 p.m. Parents must attend for students to receive their schedule. Parking permits, new student ID photos and information on Project Graduation 2012 will also be available. Parents are encouraged to use the district’s new online registration (see p.3B).

Lobo schedules out soon
Lehman High School schedules for all grade levels will be available Thursday, August 11, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., and Friday, August 12, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The Lobos will also host an on-campus immunization clinic during the same hours.
