Kyle lifeguards make splash at competition

Kyle Parks & Recreation

by KERRY URBANOWICZ

The city of Kyle takes great pride in the skill and professionalism of all the staff and crews on the city payroll. This year, the Kyle Parks and Recreation Department can show some hardware to go along side that pride.

The Parks and Recreation department sent four lifeguards from the Kyle Pool to participate in the Central Texas Lifeguard Competition, which was held in New Braunfels on July 18. This competition is an opportunity for lifeguards from all over Central Texas to show off their lifeguarding skills in a fun challenge. The lifeguards compete in all areas of aquatics from as far away as Fort Hood and Georgetown.

Teams are comprised of four lifeguards, each team had no more than two males and one lifeguard instructor. There were a total of 19 teams that attended this year’s event.

Kyle Parks and Recreation Department Lifeguards placed 2nd in Team Spinal Scenario and in Obstacle Course. Representing Kyle in the competition were Maegan Zavala (19), Lexy Waldon (17), Fernando Alvarado (17) and Josh Moreno (21).

Kyle lifeguards must meet strict employment requirements in order to serve as lifeguards. Some of these requirements are: American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, CPR/AED/First Aid Certification and continuous training. There are currently 18 lifeguards working at the Kyle Pool this summer, with 6-8 on duty at any one time.

This summer is the 8th summer the Kyle Pool has been open to the public and each year our certified lifeguards go through strenuous training and testing. It is wonderful to see them receive recognition and awards for their knowledge and dedication. The patrons of the Kyle Pool should feel good that the staff are some of the finest in the state of Texas.
