Camino Real Elementary School third-grade teacher Michelle Arredondo has been selected to attend the 2011 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy at Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, N.J. Arredondo is one of 200 third through ninth-grade teachers from around the country selected to attend the intensive one-week, all-expense paid professional development program this summer.
A panel of educators from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Science Teachers Association selected Arredondo, their decision based on her qualifications, dedication to inspiring students at an early age, and her overall commitment to enhancing the teaching profession.
During the July 17-22 Academy, teachers will discover new ways to excite students using experiments that demonstrate various math and science concepts including force, gravity and probability. The Academy curriculum works to deepen teachers’ understanding of these principles by conducting hands-on experiments that they can share with students in their classrooms.
Camino Real Elementary Principal Marivel Sedillo is quick to voice pride in her faculty members’ selection, noting that she is “not surprised that Michelle was chosen.”
“She is an outstanding teacher leader and she loves teaching and learning! She is the epitome of a life-long learner and, best of all, she truly loves what she does,” Sedillo says with conviction. She adds, “Michelle will definitely capitalize on this opportunity and share what she learns about math and science with all her colleagues and students. We are so proud of her.”
Arredondo says she’s heard great things about this professional development opportunity and admits, “I am excited to be going and I look forward to sharing everything I learn.”
The Academy reflects a partnership between ExxonMobil and Phil and Amy Mickelson, developed in conjunction with the selecting agencies in 2005. Pro golfer Mickelson encourages all teachers to apply for this incredible opportunity.
