Guillermo “Willie” Hernandez Sr., a resident of San Marcos,was called from his earthly bonds and received by the angels and his loving wife Esperanza to be with our Father in Heaven on February 23, 2011 at the age of 89. He was born June 8, 1921 in San Marcos.
A beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, he is preceded in death by his grandson Richard J. Hernandez Jr., granddaughter Beatriz Hernandez, parents Refugio and Felicianna Hernandez, brothers Marino,Filemon and Manuel Hernandez and sister Beatrice Lopez.
Willie was a resident of San Marcos where he served his community well. When duty called, Willie honored his family and country by serving in the United States Army during WW II. After returning home, he married his loving wife of 53 years, Esperanza Torres. They became very active with St. John’s Catholic Church. Willie served as an usher for more than 50 years. After retiring from San Marcos Baptist Academy and Gary Job Corps, Willie continued his work with Los Angeles Funeral Home in 1992 until he retired in 2003.
Survivors are sons Guillermo Hernandez Jr. and wife Olga of Lockhart, George Edward Hernandez and Natalie of Buda, Robert Hernandez Sr. and Mary Helen of Redwood, Mario Enrique Hernandez Sr. of San Marcos, Pedro Hernandez Sr. and Olivia of San Marcos, Richard James Hernandez Sr. and Margaret of Houston, Emilio Humberto Hernandez and Patricia of Zorn, Raymond Charles Hernandez and Belinda of Kyle and Steven Anthony Hernandez and Christina of San Marcos; daughters Mary Esther H. Escobedo and Santiago of San Antonio and Rose Alva H. Lopez and Ruben of San Marcos; brother Paul Hernandez and Janie of San Marcos; sisters Ofelia Rodriguez of Houston and Carmen Hernandez and Juan of San Marcos; sister-in-law Rafaela Hernandez of San Marcos; 24 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, February 26, 2011 at St. John’s Catholic church in San Marcos. Rev. Father Victor Mayorga officiated. Interment followed with military honors in San Marcos City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were George Edward Hernandez Jr., Guillermo Hernandez III, Robert Hernandez Jr., Michael Anthony Hernandez, Juan Luis Hernandez, David Andrew Hernandez, Pedro Hernandez II and Kevin Reyes Lopez.?Honorary pallbearers were Juan Hurtado, Pete Vargas, Lupe Torres and Kenneth Villasenor.
