Arnold Floyd Burkhart (1921-2011)

Arnold Floyd Burkhart was born August 9, 1921 in Tracey, Texas to Henry Clay Burk­hart and Annie Bell (Shelton) Burkhart. He died May 21, 2011 in Buda. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce, his parents, one sister, Oleta Rowland, and two brothers, Lewis and Raymond Burkhart.


Arnold was a veteran of World War II serving his country in both the U.S. Signal Corps and Army Air Corps as a flight engineer on a B-29 heavy bomber. His career began in Austin in 1946 in the mass transit industry. He advanced to resident manager in 1956 and retired as executive vice president of operations with American Transit Corporation System in 1986. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Martindale, American Legion Post 245, and for more than 55 years a mason of Hill City Lodge 456 Austin. Upon retirement Arnold moved to San Marcos where he enjoyed relaxing with family, playing golf, and gardening.


Arnold is survived by one son, Glenn and his wife, Kay of Buda; three daughters, Connie Manning and husband, Mike of Harvey, LA, Joyce Pruett of Joshua, TX, and Linda Smith and husband, Curtis of Lucedale, MS; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Grace Maxwell and Dorothy Stepkovitch both of Austin; and many nieces and nephews.


Family will receive friends at Pennington Funeral Home, 5-7 p.m., Thursday, June 2, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, June 3, 2011 in the Pennington Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Don Duvall officiating.


In lieu of flowers, family requests contributions in Arnold’s memory be made to C.T.M.C. Hospice Care, 1315 IH-35 N, San Marcos, Texas 78666.
