Downtown San Marcos post office to shut down

STAFF REPORTS

The U.S. Postal Service intends to shutter its downtown San Marcos post office in no sooner than six months.

As part of a national effort to re-evaluate postal facilities, USPS plans to sell the downtown location at 301 North Guadalupe Street and relocate the retail, bulk mail acceptance, and post office box operations to a newly renovated area of the San Marcos Carrier Annex, located at 201 South Stagecoach Trail near Wonder World Drive and Hunter Road. Once the downtown operations have moved to the annex facility, the annex will become the San Marcos Main Post Office.

Spokesman Sam Bolen said the 11 employees at the downtown location will not lose their jobs as a result of the move. USPS is considering keeping a small storefront presence downtown.
