Buda’s city manager is Galveston finalist

WILLIAMS

STAFF REPORT

Buda City Manager Kenneth Williams is one of three finalists for the city manager position in Galveston.

Galveston’s City Council will decide as early as next week whether to hire Williams from Buda, where he has worked for more than three years.

Williams said he had not been looking for another job, but a search firm identified him as a candidate for the position. A former emergency management coordinator for the city of Lufkin, Williams said he has experience responding to – and rebuilding from – natural disasters such as hurricanes.

“Galveston has still got a lot of work to do to rebuild” after Hurricane Ike destroyed much of the city in 2008, he said.

What’s more, the population of Galveston is nearly seven times larger than Buda’s. “It’s an opportunity for career advancement,” he said.

The Galveston City Council is scheduled to interview Williams and the other two candidates – Michael Kovacs, assistant city manager for Park City, Utah; and Derek Todd, a management consultant for the city of Greeley, Colo. – on Dec. 19. The council also expects to make a decision later that day.
