Big issues await lawmakers in next legislative session

WELLS

STAFF REPORT

It is perhaps appropriate during the recently observed National School Counselors Week to recall that longtime Hays CISD Counselor Christy Wells was forced to take medical leave during the Spring 2010 semester. As a result of her health issues, it was determined that she would be unable to return to work. Her co-worker and friend at Barton Middle School for more than fifteen years, school nurse Susie Kana, has announced a scholarship in the popular counselor’s name.

Kana notes a sentiment shared by all who know Wells, that of being “fortunate” to know her. In her letter announcing the scholarship, Kana says that over the years of knowing Wells, “I witnessed again and again the powerful impact she had on our students. Christy remains true to her professional title…she is a counselor. Her intellect determined countless paths to inspire kids to succeed in school.”

Reinforcing the personal endorsement, Kana – like others – believes that “Christy’s light really shines when her heart leads students to overcome many challenges ... Her influence has also touched the staff with whom she worked.” Assessing Wells’ career where she was “loved by her peers on every campus she graced,” Kana says she and other supporters “would like to ensure that her legacy remains at HCISD.” That goal will be supported by establishment of the scholarship in her honor.

Community members wishing to support the effort should make donations to Hays High School, with notation of the Christy Wells Scholarship. Checks may be left with Kana at Barton Middle School or Jacque Glomb at the Hays High School front office.

Questions may be addressed to Kana at 268-1472, ext. 6430, or at [email protected].

Hopes are for the Christy Wells Scholarship to be awarded to a 2011 Hays High School graduate this spring and that scholarship honoree Wells will be involved in the selection process.
