Reinventing New Year’s Eve

Tables and individual tickets are still available for the Hays CISD Education Foundation’s Denim and Diamonds annual fund-raiser this Saturday, March 5, at Texas Old Town. The event features  a gourmet dinner, a stand out band, and live and silent auctions of some of the area’s most appealing items. Alumni tables seat four and are priced at $500, and business sponsorships are priced $1,500 for bronze, seating six, $2,500 for silver and $5,000 for gold, those tables seating eight. Dad’s Club seeking help

The Elm Grove Elementary School Dad’s Club is seeking donations for its Spring Rummage Sale this Saturday, March 5, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the front parking lot of the campus. The group also  needs volunteers to help with the sale. Donations should be priced and in good condition, and may be dropped off the morning of the sale. Proceeds benefit the Eagles’ end of year dance. To volunteer or for more information, contact Matt Moncada at 504-453-8080.


Financial aid offered Saturday

Financial Aid Saturday is set for this Saturday, March 5, 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., at the Lehman High School library. The event is designed to help seniors, former graduates or current college students complete the Free Application for Federal Students Aid (FAFSA) for next school year. Volunteers from a number of agencies, as well as Spanish translators, will be available to assist. Seniors should contact their high school counselors for information on items to bring and early registration. Parents and students should bring a copy of their W-2 and income tax forms to complete the FAFSA. All Financial Aid Saturday services are free to all seniors, regardless of their campus. Starlight Symphony performs Sunday

The Starlight Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Donald K. Miller, performs in concert this Sunday, March 6, 4 p.m., at the Hays CISD Performing Arts Center. The group is a regional community orchestra for a wide area of Central Texas, drawing participants from Johnson City to Canyon Lake and including Buda and Kyle members. The concert will feature a showcase of its Youth Orchestra and two Young Artist Soloists, Christine Anderson and Madison Johnston.


Elementary choirs offer concert

Four of the Hays CISD elementary school choirs will perform in concert Thursday, March 10, 6 p.m., at the Hays CISD Performing Arts Center. Those campus choirs performing include the James Hickey-directed Tom Green Elementary Choir, the Ralph Pfluger Elementary Choir under the direction of Melissa Hance, Director William Crock’s Elm Grove Elementary Choir, and the Monika Matthes-directed Buda Elementary Choir. Each choir will perform two songs, with all of the choirs combining for a concert-ending finale.


Art camp offered

Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about summer camps, and one early offering comes from Negley Elementary art teacher Amy Cigainero. She’s featuring a June 6-10 Costa Rican Art Camp to students currently in kindergarten through fifth grade. Campers will learn how to use a variety of media and experience activities, including clay, sculpture, paper mache, drawing, print-making, and Shrinky dinks. Cost is $160 and is due by May 1. Chapa’s 5th 5K offers $500

The Fifth Annual Chapa 5K Challenge is set for Saturday, April 9, and this year’s big news is the $500 (conditional) prize  to the organization with the most entries. An unconditional $250 prize is also offered. Fees are $5 for elementary students, $10 for middle and high school students, and $15 for 18 and over. Three school levels and 10 age levels are offered and first, second and third place awards will be given in each. An alternate activity, Zumba, will be offered for $5. Hawks garage sale set

The Hemphill Elementary Hawks PTA has scheduled a Saturday, March 12, Community Garage Sale and vendor slots are now available, priced at $7, for individuals to sell arts, crafts, toys, clothes, furniture or rummage items. Science Hall Blood Drive coming

Science Hall Elementary School is sponsoring a blood drive, set for Saturday, March 26, 9 a.m.–noon, in the school parking lot. School nurse Maria Mendoza-Rodriguez, R.N., can be contacted at 268-8502 for more local information, but early registration is recommended at www.inyourhands.org, where the sponsor code of “sciencehall” will be required. Additional information, such as who is eligible to give blood, can also be found at the site.
