Bulldog reunion

Buda Bits
by SANDRA GRIZZLE

A great time was had at Ruby Ranch Lodge Friday night for all who attended the 50th reunion of the Buda High School class of ‘61. From a class of 27 students in 1961, five are deceased and 16 attended the reunion and with the classes of 1960 and 1962 joining the group, a total of 60 folks filled the room. Ex-students came in from Arizona, California, Florida, Louisiana, New Mexico, North Carolina and Oklahoma, as well as nearby towns Austin, Bastrop, Dripping Springs, Georgetown, Kendalia, Kyle, Lockhart, San Marcos, Wimberley and, of course, Buda was well represented. All enjoyed good food and lots of talk of days gone by. Everyone agreed that the 50 years went by very fast.

On Saturday, the reunion continued with around 155 folks gathering at the old Buda High School. Jean Puryear won the raffled “handkerchief” quilt. Jean is the wife of 1961 grad Robert Puryear who worked on the Heep Ranch for many years before they moved to Dripping Springs. Next year’s reunion will be held April 14, 2012.

After the official big reunion, the folks from the classes of 1960, ’61 and ’62 came together for a few more hours of visiting at the home of Wesley and Joyce Roach on Cedar Street in Buda. More food and drinks were consumed and many more photos taken. The highlight of the gathering was listening to Mark New sing and play guitar.

Main Street Café in downtown Buda is now under the management of longtime Buda resident, Lorri Lowden. Lowden’s future plans for the café include adding barbeque to the menu, opening an outdoor dining area to the side of the brick building and changing the name. However, for the time being, everything will remain much the same. Hours for the café are Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.- 8 p.m., opening at 8 a.m. on Saturdays with breakfast until 11a.m., followed by lunch and dinner menus until closing time 8 p.m. The café will not open on Sundays. Stop by for good food and visit with Lorri and her staff

Many years ago people around this area were saying, “do pray for the railroad to come through” now we say, “do pray for rain.”
