Creators come together: Buda boasts fine art at upcoming fest

From photography to acrylics, sculpture to textiles, art abounds at the Fine Arts Festival. Artist Aly Winningham displays handmade mobiles dangling from her booth at the Fine Arts Festival in 2009. (Photo by Jen Biundo)

STAFF REPORT

On a stroll through downtown Buda this weekend you can see the many-colored shadowboxes of Oscar Silva, the paper sculpture of Shou Ping and the handiwork of many other Texas artists.

Art collectors can expect to find sculpture, oil and acrylic paintings, pastel drawings, fine jewelry and glasswork. It’s all part of the Buda Fine Arts Festival, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Free parking is at Buda City Park. Admission to the festival is free.

In case you get hungry, there’s a “Taste of Buda” sampling from downtown restaurants. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for at the stalls, there’s another chance to buy art: proceeds from a silent auction of donated work will go toward scholarships for two young artists from Hays CISD.

Those scholarship winners are Patricia Swanson of Buda and Michael Lippe of Kyle. Both will have pieces on display.

And on Saturday that’s not all the art-centered enjoyment, either.

If you have a Dionysian streak, head to the park for the Buda Beer and Polka Fest. If yours is a quieter, Apollonian temperament, go to City Hall for the Onion Creek Senior Citizens Quilt Show. Either way, it’ll be fun.

The Hays Free Press is a sponsor of the Buda Fine Arts Festival.
