STAFF REPORTS
Texas State placed the most student-athletes on the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Spring Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced Thursday. The Bobcats had 102 of the record total 953 total student-athletes named to the list.
The list includes former Hays High standouts Shelby Calabrese (women’s basketball), Kellie Trinkaus (track and field), Amanda Rodriguez (track and field) and Anna Hernandez (softball).
Calabrese, who helped propel the Lady Rebels to the 2009 Class 4A UIL State Basketball Tournament at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, has a 3.63 grade point average in Interdisciplinary Studies.
Trinkaus sports a stellar 4.0 GPA in pre-nursing, as does Rodriguez (4.0 GPA in exercise and sports science). Hernandez has a 3.29 GPA in exercise and sports science.
Aside from having the most student-athletes on the Honor Roll, Texas State also led the league with a total of 19 student-athletes who recorded a 4.0 GPA. Leading the Bobcats to their third consecutive baseball regular-season title and fifth overall was junior Tyler Sibley. A two-time first-team all-conference selection, Sibley, an accounting major with a 3.89 GPA, was a CoSIDA Second-Team Academic All-American this season after also being named the 2011 Texas State Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Elena Horn, a member of the women’s track team, was the 2011 Texas State Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. She carried a 3.56 GPA in mathematics while helping the Bobcats to fourth-place finishes during both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
The record total of 953 student-athletes named to the spring honor roll surpassed the record of 932 set last spring. This year’s list boasts 12 student-athletes of the year, four players of the year and a total of 143 student-athletes with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages during the spring semester.
The honor roll includes student-athletes who took part in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.
The Southland Conference Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll is released within 30 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA. Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.
