Check it out on your Kindle

Check it Out

by LaNAN BEDWELL

We’ve been patiently waiting and waiting. And the time has finally come. Amazon’s Kindle finally has a library card! That’s right! You can now check out books on your Kindle through the Buda Public Library.

Sometimes digital downloading can be overwhelming and confusing. Here’s what to do: First log in to the Buda Library website with your card account number. Scroll to the bottom of the home page. There you will see a link for Overdrive-Central Texas (Amazon’s library lending is mediated by Overdrive). Once you click on Overdrive, it will take you to the Central Texas Digital Consortium. Scroll down and on the left side you can browse from a selection of fiction or nonfiction e-books. Once you have discovered the book you want, click on the Kindle “add to cart” link. From there it will take you directly to the Amazon website where you will finally click on the “get library book” link. Copies are limited so if the book you want is already checked out, you can easily place it on reserve. After two weeks your book will automatically be “returned” without you having to do anything. Brilliant, huh?

This is good news for readers and especially good news for those that are embracing digital media. I for one love the convenience of the e-readers. However, I love visiting the library; holding a real paper book in my hands is still nice too! Questions? Talk to your friendly Buda librarians.
