A dozen Chapa Middle School art students, the first in Hays CISD to compete in such an event, did really well at the recent Junior VASE event. The 12 Chapa students were among 600 Region 13 students to compete in the Junior Visual Arts Scholastic Event held at Walsh Middle School in Round Rock. The event is sponsored statewide by the Texas Art Education Association.

The competition included an eight minute interview and a critique of the student’s artwork. Of the 12 Chapa Middle School students, 11 were awarded a score “IV = Superior,” the highest possible score, and a medal. They included Annalysa McConnel, Jesse Perez, Zachary Salas, Damienn Alcala, Natalie Salazar, Adrian Carrillo, Judith Lima, Ethan Soto, Supreme Hinton, Jonathan Gomez, and Alejandra Puga, along with Jacque Foster, who received a score of “III = Excellent.”

In addition, Alejandra Puga was awarded the Silver Medallion and her artwork will be photographed for future display at the statewide level. Silver Medallions are awarded at the conclusion of the event to only 8 percent of students who received a superior rating and are selected by a special jury panel.
