Odds & Ends
by MYRTLE HEIDEMAN
There were no parades or speeches in Uhland to honor our military personnel for all they have done and/or are doing. In our hearts, we have “thanks” and admiration for all they have done or are doing to protect the rest of us.
We invite all who are interested to stop by city hall (Uhland Community Center) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – noon or you may wish to call first, 512-398-7399 and Karen will open the door for you to see what has been done to honor our heroes. About 50 pictures, plaques of all branches of the military and flags have been put up on the wall. We encourage all who have not done so, to gather a picture, in uniform if possible (5”x7” no frame), a short history, where stationed or served, when they entered the military, rank and date of discharge, of anyone you know who served. You may leave it at the city hall or take it to County Line Water Company. Your participation will greatly be appreciated.

It’s graduation time! In our family, there were four young folks who graduated during the week of May 28.
Kassi Heideman, daughter of Dennis and Kim Heideman, granddaughter of Danny and Sharon Heideman and Barbara and Ken Baker, graduated from Home School. The ceremony and celebration was held under a grove of trees in the pasture of their ranch in the Rogers Ranch community. Pastor Jim Davis brought the welcome and Kassi Heideman was conferred by the presentation of her diploma by her parents. Kassi responded by thanking her parents for all they have done to help her to complete her high school education and described her future plans. She is pursing a home health care degree, which she hopes will promote her from a CNA to an LVN. With God’s help we know she will succeed.
Ilana Hager of San Marcos was also honored on her home school graduation. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hager of San Marcos. Her parents also presented her diploma. In her speech she thanked her parents for all their help and support. She and her three siblings presented their mother with a gift, who is retiring after teaching her four children.
A lunch was served following the ceremony. All enjoyed the delicious carry-in meal and videos of the two graduates. Congratulations to both.
Drew Schnautz, son of Kevin and Jamie Schnautz and grandson of Kenneth and the late Dorothy Schnautz, graduated from Hays High School on May 28. A gathering for relatives and friends was held at his parent’s home preceding the commencement exercises. Drew has several options he wants to see about. Congratulations.
Nicole Plant of Fentress graduated from the Prairie Lea High School also on the 28th of May. She is the daughter of Cindy and Wes Plant of Fentress and the granddaughter of Frank and Helen Scheel of Palm Dessert, CA. A note of interest, there were only 11 students in the graduating class. Nicole plans to attend Blinn College in Brenham. The Scheels attended a grandson’s graduation in Folsom, CA. a few days prior. Congratulations to both. Nicole received three scholarships.

On Monday, Memorial Day, the Sheels, accompanied by their daughter Cindy of Fentress and grandson, James Plant and wife Rachael of Kyle, stopped by for a visit with Uncle Raymond and Aunt Myrtle Heideman. Clarence Heideman also stopped by. He and Daniel Heideman had attended the Memorial Day service by the Kyle/Buda VFW. Later they all gathered at Daniel and Sharon Heideman’s home for lunch, as did Benny and Carol Schumann of New Braunfels. Terry Kleen also stopped by to say hello to her cousins.
The rest of the afternoon was spent visiting the Wall of Honor and Memory in the Uhland Community Center and placing flowers on the graves of loved ones in the Uhland Live Oak Cemetery.
