Kyle Crossing bridge set to open Tuesday

A new five-lane bridge over Interstate 35 is scheduled to open Tuesday afternoon at Kyle Crossing and Windy Hill Road in north Kyle.

The bridge reconstruction replaces a two-lane bridge that had become inadequate as the area developed and had become a throughway for large trucks from nearby businesses.

"This should be a big improvement to one of the most congested and busiest intersections in Precinct 2," Mark Jones, Hays County Precinct 2 commissioner, said in a news release.

Hays County and the city of Kyle paid $13.2 million for the Texas Department of Transportation project. Over time, TxDOT will reimburse the city and county for the project funds.

The construction also closed a gap in the west-side frontage road to allow the frontage roads between FM 2001 and FM 1626 to operate in one direction.

“The completion of the Kyle Crossing Bridge will ease traffic congestion and greatly improve public safety,” Kyle Mayor Lucy Johnson said in the news release. “It is great to see our partnership with the county work to get this important project completed. This bridge, along with the rest of the work being done on IH-35 throughout Kyle, will benefit the residents and business in our city and Hays County for decades to come.”
