Lady Reb soccer hungry for Hippos

by JASON GORDON

The Hays High girls soccer team will be looking for its first playoff win since 2009 when it plays at Hutto Thursday night in a game scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

After a tough 2010 campaign, the Lady Rebs have gained some of the swagger back that helped them advance to the regional finals just three years ago.

“We are nervous, but we are ready to go,” Hays senior Lena New said. “I want to get past the first round and know we are very capable of doing so. I feel we can bring back the tradition of Hays girls soccer.”

Hays head coach Cole Reynolds saw his team go 5-0-1 in the second half of district play to wrap up District 49-4A’s No. 2 seed in the postseason.

“I’d be extremely disappointed if we lose Thursday night,” Reynolds said. “We have worked hard all season to improve, and are playing some of our best soccer right now. We scored two goals on a Bastrop team that had only allowed two all district season long. If a break or two goes our way in that game, we’re co-district champs. I think the momentum of what we accomplished in that game will carry over to the playoffs. I’d like to win this one against Hutto and see how long we can keep this thing going.”
